ANTHROPOPHAGUS 2 VHS (BOOTLEG)
THE MOVIE:C The crazed zombie from Joe D'Amato's Antropophagus is back, and he's ready for some more flesh and blood. Antropophagus 2 starts off with a priest chasing the zombie from the first flick. The zombie promptly impales himself on a large fence and is sent to the local hospital. Soon after the zombie flees the hospital to go on a bloody rampage, while a local cop and the preist search for him endlessly.
Anthropophagus 2 starts off pretty good with a surprisingly good plot, even though it totally goes against the first film. The movie is full of plot holes which make you wonder what this movie could have been if the script had a rewrite or two. After the first forty minutes which are surprisingly entertaining, the movie starts to have long dragged out sequences which are just plain boring, and seem to be in the film for time purposes. The gore effects are pretty tame compared to the original, but there are still a couple graphic scenes like that of a nurse getting a hospital drill shoved in her head. One thing this movie also lacks is the the zombie devouring his victims which was pretty disappointing, and makes you wonder what was going through old Joe D'Amato's head. I still enjoyed this movie allot better than the origianl, but it was still pretty disappointing.
BODY COUNT: 6
DEATHS:B- Surgical drill through the head, head sawwing, hatchet to the head, strangulation, and a decapatation.
OVERALL:C
Antropohagus 2 isnt really that great of a film, even though plotwise it canabalizes the original. Gore wise though its pale in comparison to the graphic scenes in Anthropophagus. If you are a D'Amato fan you should definately check it out, if not check out Burial Ground instead.

ARMY OF DARKNESS THE DIRECTORS CUT BOOTLEG EDITION DVD (ANCHOR BAY)
THE MOVIE:B-
Ash is back baby and he's ready to kick some more deadite butt, in Army Of Darkness the third and final film of the Evil Dead series. The movie picks up were Evil Daed 2 left off, with our hereo being wisked away to Englands Dark Ages by the Book Of The Dead. Ash soon finds out the only way for him to return home is to obtain the Necronomicon, but theres a hitch he has to say an incantation before taking the book. Well as usual Ash screw up and the next thing you know he along with the local townspeople are fighting an Army Of Darkness.
I personally find Army Of Darkness the weakest of the Evil Dead series. It starts out pretty good, but once you get to the battle scenes it just starts to get extremly boring (and long, the battle scene runs over 30 minutes long in this version). Dont get me wrong though there is some pretty cool Three Stooges type comedy like in Evil Dead 2, and even more one liners, but theese cant save the film from the extremly boring battle scenes. This paticular version of Army Of Darkness is the original directors cut running 96 miunutes, and contains many scenes cut from the Universal version., but they're mainly battle scenes. This version also contains the original ending which is cool but I kinda like the S-Mart ending better. Overall if your an Evil Dead freak you should definately pick up a copy especially since its the directors cut. If you've been living under a rock and dont know about the Evil Dead series check out the first two, there a hell of allot better.

DEATHS:C
Decapatations, dismemberments, shootings, forkings, death by fire, stabbings, and crushings.
PICTURE:C
Army of Darkness is presented in its widescreen format and looks pretty good, with the exception of the scenes that were added to the film for this directors cut which look grainy and really bad.
AUDIO:A
Army of Darkness is presented in Dolby Digital Surround Sounbd 2.0 and sound great.
EXTRAS:B+
Chapter Stops - 23
Creature Concept Drawings - 20 pics drawn by the spfx crew.
Deleted Scenes - 4, including the original opening (creepy), Ash confronts Arthur (lame), the original windmill scene (long), Ash visits Arthur (also lame). The best part about theese deleted scenes is you can watch them with commentary by director Sam Rami and star Bruce Cambell, which is pretty cool.
Commentary - with Sam and Bruce, as well as Ivan Rami who joins in right near the end of the film. The commentary is by far the best thing on this disc, Sam and Bruce are really entertaining to listen to, Id have to say more than the film itself.
Storyboards - There is also an option on the disc to watch the complete movie with storyboards, which is cool but do we really need them.
OVERALL:B
Army of Darkness is a pretty good flick with some long boring battle scenes, but if you're an Evil Dead fan you should buy this disc for the commentary alone. If your not familiar with the series check out the first two ther allot better. |
